Six mindful eating habits that can change your relationship with food
When it comes to our relationship with food, it’s not just what we eat that matters, it’s how we eat it.
Mindful eating helps us tell the difference between physical hunger and emotional cravings, recognise when we’re full, and enjoy our meals without guilt or distraction.
It’s about slowing down and paying attention to our bodies. And, over time, it can support both your health and weight goals.
Six easy ways to practise mindful eating
1. Serve your food with care
There’s a reason we get hungry just watching a cooking show. Presentation matters, and serving your food thoughtfully can make eating a more enjoyable experience.
Take a moment to be creative and fun, or keep it simple and enjoyable.
2. Step away from screens
Ever found yourself at the bottom of a snack packet with no memory of how you got there
Eating in front of the TV or while scrolling through your phone makes it easy to disconnect from what and how much you’re eating.
Instead, portion your food, sit down without screens, and savour the meal.
3. Engage your senses
Notice the flavours, textures, colours, and even the sound of your food. Paying attention to the aroma and temperature as you chew helps turn meals into moments of enjoyment.
It’s a small act of respect for both your food and your body.
4. Slow down
It can take up to 20 minutes for your brain to realise that you’re full. Eating quickly makes it easy to overeat before you feel full.
5. Put down your fork
Physically setting your cutlery down between mouthfuls can stop you from rushing through a meal.
It might feel strange at first, but soon the rhythm of “bite, pause, repeat” becomes second nature.
If you’re dining alone, use that pause to reflect or read. If you’re with someone, enjoy a proper conversation.
6. Make mealtime enjoyable
Eat outside, put on some music or a podcast, light a candle, or add fresh flowers to the table. Even a tidy space away from your desk can make workday meals feel special.
The more inviting the environment, the more likely you’ll slow down and enjoy the experience.
