Eczema flare ups can be caused by several factors, but an important trigger is the way cool, dry air leeches our skin’s natural moisture. Because of this, regular moisturisation is an extremely important step towards finding relief from flaky, itchy, dry skin.

While different moisturisers are available, they’re not all as effective at helping control eczema. In-store, you’ll see ointments, creams and lotions available. But what is each designed for, and which is the best choice for your skin?

Understanding the difference between ointments, creams and lotions

Basically, the difference comes down to the amount of oil and water a product contains.

Differences

What are ointments?
What are creams?
What are lotions?

What are ointments?

  • Ointments have the most amount of oil and do not contain water or preservatives, which means they are excellent at "sealing in" moisture
  • They contain "occlusives", which are heavier ingredients designed to form a barrier on the skin and help stop moisture escaping (this makes them a top choice for treating eczema, as well as very cracked or chapped skin)
  • Some people don’t like their greasy texture (if this is you, consider using ointment at night on affected areas and a cream during the day)

What are creams?

  • Creams have the second most amount of oil (often around 50%), meaning they are still good at sealing in moisture, though apply more easily and feel less greasy
  • Work well for treating dry or sensitive skin, for general winter use, or for people living in cold or dry climates

What are lotions?

  • Lotions contain the least amount of oil and are thinner in consistency and need to be applied more frequently
  • They have a greater water content, meaning though they apply very easily, they tend to evaporate quickly
  • Their low oil content, lack of occlusives and possible addition of preservatives that could irritate skin mean they not usually an effective option for treating eczema
  • Instead, lotions are more suited to people with normal to oily skin or who live in warm, humid climates

What moisturiser should I use to treat my eczema?

As a general rule, a greater oil percentage means a product is better able to lock in moisture and show dryness the door. When treating eczema, ointments are usually the most effective option, followed by creams. As always, when trying a new product, remember to do a patch test on your inner elbow or wrist, and check for signs of an allergic reaction over the next 24-48 hours.
