When hay fever strikes, try dual therapy

Did you know 1 in 5 Australians experiences hay fever*?  It always astounds me how many people suffer through hay fever and allergy symptoms – especially at this time of year, knowing how many effective treatments and approaches can help! That’s why I’ll let you in on a little secret that could make all the difference to managing your hay fever – dual therapy.

Dual product therapy or combination therapy is a pharmacist favourite in treating hay fever. Lots of allergy products are formulated to target specific symptoms like itchy eyes or a runny nose. But when you combine two or more complementary therapies, it harnesses the power of multiple products to provide more effective (and sometimes longer-lasting) relief of symptoms. For example, an antihistamine tablet by itself might clear up some mild symptoms, but when you combine this with a corticosteroid nasal spray, and antihistamine eye drops, you may find the multiple symptoms you are experiencing are better targeted from all sides with dual therapy.

Of course when it comes to hay fever, prevention is better than a cure and there’s a few things you can do to help prevent hay fever:

• Check the pollen count before leaving the house
• Avoid common hay fever triggers, where possible
• Wash your hands often, especially after touching animals or flowers
• Avoid rubbing irritated areas as it can increase inflammation and make symptoms worse
• Try a daily saline nasal rinse to keep sinuses clear
