Get psychology on your side for long-term weight loss success

Weight loss is more than just a physical transformation – your thoughts, beliefs, and mindset all play a big role in reaching and maintaining your goal weight.

Understanding these psychological factors can help you make better choices and keep going even when things get tough.

The mental side of change

Losing weight can feel like a challenge to your self-identity. You might wonder who you’ll be once you reach your goal or feel a bit unsettled by the changes.

You’re not becoming a different person, but a healthier version of who you already are.

Stress, boredom, loneliness, or low self-esteem can all influence how you approach weight loss.

Seeing the TWC Weight Care Program through and checking in regularly with your Pharmacist or healthcare provider can help make sure you’re covering all areas that affect your progress.

Rethink unhelpful patterns

If you tend to see things in black and white, for example, calling a day a “failure” just because you went off-plan, try to reframe your thinking. One meal, one missed workout, or even an off-week doesn’t undo all the healthy changes you’ve made.

Consistency matters, but sustainable weight loss comes from the combination of all your new habits and lifestyle changes over time.

It can help to challenge your own beliefs about weight and weight management. If past ups and downs have made you doubt your ability to succeed, look at the progress you’ve already made in this program.

Use those wins as the proof you need to keep moving forward.

Four tips to build a strong mindset

1. Keep your goals front and centre

Write your goals down and review them regularly to stay focused. This helps you stay clear on your priorities and maintain motivation, even on tougher days.

2. Focus on the positives for your health

Notice the ways your choices are already improving your wellbeing, such as more energy or better sleep. Recognising these benefits can help you stay encouraged and committed.

3. Build confidence through small wins

Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Each success reinforces your belief that you can keep making progress.

4. Get support when you need it

Your Pharmacist can help you find strategies that work for you and adjust your plan when needed. Having someone in your corner can keep you motivated and accountable.

We talked about mindset in Week 5. It might be helpful to go back and revisit that week’s content. It’s a great way to see how far you’ve come and to reconnect with the tools and strategies you’ve already learned.
