Why does my skin seem to react to cooler weather?

In summer, we can take smoother skin for granted. But then winter hits, and with it *bam!* dry skin. But why does this happen? In a nutshell, it's all to do with dryness. Our skin does a lot of good for us – but dryness does a lot of bad for it. So, let’s get out our microscopes and take a closer look at our skin.

What is skin for?

Your skin is like a security guard between your insides and the outside world. The big bouncer at the door is your epidermis: it's there to keep the riff raff out.

The epi-what now?

The epidermis is the fancy name for your skin's outermost layer (the part you can actually see!). It renews itself every four weeks or so, as new skin cells rise from below to replace dead cells.

What does it do?

Thanks to your epidermis, you skin stays hydrated and the nasties can't get in. It’s a genius at self-repair. When the barrier is breached (such as when you cut a finger) its ability to repair itself quickly is amazing.

What can go wrong?

Imagine your epidermis as a wall made of bricks, held in place by cement*. However, in winter, this cement can “loosen”, letting moisture out,^ which allowing in the cold, wind, and lack of humidity.* The result? Flaky, itchy, red, dry skin.

Give me the plan!

It’s extremely important to moisturise regularly. When applied to the brick wall analogy, the moisturiser is like painting the wall, keeping germs out and moisture in.* Essentially: moisturising rehydrates your epidermis and helps your skin recover lost suppleness.
