Tips for preparing your child for a vaccination
1. Preparing your kids for a vaccination – Before you visit
a. Talk to your child – Be open and honest explaining why the vaccination is important and what they can expect. Let them know they may feel a slight pinch or sting like an ant bite.
b. Offer a reward – Your child is about to perform a heroic feat and they should be rewarded for it! Suggest they pick dinner that night or a special toy from a nearby shop.
c. Engage with friends and family – Often the best reassurance comes from their friends or siblings who have also been vaccinated. Seek others to help motivate and provide support. Your child may even suggest bringing along a special ‘support’ person on the day.
2. Preparing your kids for a vaccination – On the day
a. Go in confident – Your child will take their emotional cues from you on the day so stride into the pharmacy positive and calm bearing a huge smile. Introduce your child to the pharmacist as a ‘superstar’ (because they are 😊)
b. Distract and Comfort – Pack a special toy, book or favourite blanket that your child can cuddle during the vaccination. Distract your child with their favourite song, an iPad or by talking to them softly. Maintain eye contact with them and reassure them that everything will be ok.
c. Hold your child firmly - For little ones it is often best to have your child sit on your lap during the vaccination. Hold your child firmly at both wrists to help prevent any sudden movements while ensuring your child feels comfortable.
3. Preparing your kids for a vaccination – After the vaccination
a. Comfort your child – It’s difficult to know how your child will react but it’s important you never scold your child. Seek feedback by asking them how they felt so together you can prepare for the next time they need a vaccination.
b. Let them pick the bandaid! – The rewards process starts as soon as the process is complete. Giving your child control over their reward is a good thing so let them pick the bandaid or the lollipop. They deserve it!
c. Heap praise on your little hero – Acknowledge your child for being brave and encourage them to boast about their heroic feats to their friends. By sharing their experience, they can also help the next child prepare for their vaccination.
