How to take the pressure off aching joints

While joint pain is not limited to the winter months, many sufferers certainly perceive a correlation between changes in the weather and an increase in their aches and pains. But how could the onset of winter affect arthritis? While scientists haven't come up with a definitive reason, some theories may explain it. One idea is that changes in barometric pressure (the weight of the air) has an effect. Another is that we tend to move less in winter, and this lack of use can stiffen our joints.
The goal = less pain
To reduce winter aches and pains, it's a good idea to prepare strategies in advance. It comes down to tuning in and taking notice of your body and attitude.

7 tips to help keep winter pain under control
1. Keep motivated – Mornings aches can be the toughest, so it's important to start the day with a positive attitude. Rather than reaching for medication first thing, put on music, repeat affirmations or mentally prepare yourself.
2. Keep warm – Protect your joints from temperature changes by dressing warmly in comfortable layers, with socks, gloves and a beanie or hat.
3. Keep moving – Gentle movement keeps our joints flexible and strong. Try walking, stretching, indoor swimming or playing with the little ones.
4. Keep nourished – Eating a healthy diet goes a long way to maintaining a healthy weight, which keeps joint strain to a minimum.
5. Keep treating holistically – Use oral pain relief medication, braces, topical rubs and resistance bands as necessary, remembering that their ideal purpose is short term pain and flare up relief, to allow you to continue being active.
6. Keep supported – Tell your family, friends and allied healthcare team when you’re feeling more pain, and how they can help. Maybe you'd like someone to move with you, prepare a meal or help explain to the grandkids that you need to be treated especially kindly.
7. Keep informed – Never be afraid to ask your healthcare team questions. You can also find guides and tips on managing different types of pain at https://terrywhitechemmart.com.au/health-information/pain
