7 Makeup hacks you need in your life
Makeup has certainly seen its share of changing trends … some we can probably all agree are best left in the past. It’s time to spill the beans on our favourite makeup hacks we’ve gathered along the way – one beauty lover to another. Change your makeup game with these simple tricks.

Tip 1. X marks the spot
Perfect your pout using a lipliner in the same colour as your lipstick to draw an X through your cupid’s bow (top to bottom), then trace out the rest of your lips and fill in with lipstick. This helps accentuate the angle of the cupid’s bow – and may just become your new favourite lipstick trick!

Tip 2. Wing it
Have you ever tried applying liquid eyeliner before, only to go too heavy on one side, try to fix it, and smudge it in the process? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. If you love a wing but don’t want to commit to the solid lines of liquid liner, eyeshadow can be used to create a soft wing. Dip an angled brow/shadow brush into chocolate or black eyeshadow and apply to the outer corners of your eye as close to the lash line as possible, angling upwards for a soft wing look. Best of all, if you make a mistake, it’s easy to rub off and try again. Voila!

Tip 3. Prime time
Just as it’s important to prime your skin before applying foundation, you should also prime your eyelids to help create a smooth surface for product. This is especially important as skin thins with age, and can start to appear a little translucent or uneven in tone. Add a dot or two of primer, and dab in before applying eyeshadow.

Tip 4. Farewell fallout
Have you ever perfected your makeup, before realising fallout (the tiny flecks of eyeshadow) has settled into shadows under your eyes? Don’t wash off your makeup and start again – we know a sticky tape hack that might help! Taking a piece of sticky tape, stick it to the back of your hand a few times (to avoid picking up makeup that’s meant to stay on your face), then lightly pat it over the stray eyeshadow flecks under your eyes and lift off. You may need to repeat this process a few times – the tackiness of the tape should help lift the loose fallout particles without removing foundation.

Tip 5. Smooth lips
Just as our skin needs to be exfoliated, so too do our lips – especially if we plan on applying lipstick which can catch in cracks. Exfoliating lips gently before you start your makeup routine removes excess dead skin and creates a smoother surface for your lipstick to be applied to2. Remember to apply a moisturising lip balm over the top before applying lipstick or gloss.

Tip 6. Lovely lashes
Getting mascara right is key. Defined lashes help our eyes appear larger, which can create a more youthful appearance3. One of the top tricks makeup artists talk about when applying mascara is wiggling the wand at the base of the lashes before pulling straight through – even for those of us with quite fine lashes, this trick can help coat both sides of the lash, creating separation and the illusion of fullness4.

Tip 7. Avoid lipstick-stained teeth
I think we can all agree lipstick belongs on the lips – not on teeth! A simple trick to help avoid lipstick-stained teeth is to stick your (clean!) index finger in your mouth after your lippie is applied. Close your lips around your finger to make a pout, and then pull your finger straight out. This can help to remove excess lipstick sitting on the inside of your lips before it transfers onto your teeth.
