What is ear wax?
Ear wax or cerumen as it’s known by its medical name, is not so much wax a concoction of dry skin cells, hair fibres, fatty acids and sweat secretions produced in the outer area of our ear canal. 7-8, 12
What causes ear wax build up?
The ear naturally expels ear wax through the movement of the jaw, in actions such as talking and however, some people produce more ear wax than others. When this happens, an excess or even blockage of cerumen can occur in the ear, leading to some irritating and sometimes painful symptoms Other causes of excessive ear wax include attempting to clean the ear with cotton swabs or a finger. Indeed, many people realise that the shape of the ear canal makes it difficult to manually clean and inserting a foreign object into the ear is not recommended as it can push the wax further into the ear causing a blockage Similarly, you are also more likely to experience excessive ear wax if you regularly use hearing aids or headphones.

4 TIPS TO AVOID WAX BUILDING UP IN YOUR EARS:
Keep things out! The number one rule to avoid an ear wax build-up is never to stick anything into your ears, including cotton tips and fingers. 2,4-6
Clean ears with a damp cloth simply by wiping the outside ear every few days and ensure ears are always dry. 5
Take a break. Minimise the use of earphones and ear plugs as their continued use reduces the opportunity for ear wax to fall out. 3
Drops may help. Consider using wax softening drops like WAXSOL.

• Fill the dropper from the bottle. • Tilt your head to one side. • Gently drip WAXSOL into your blocked ear until it is full. • Place a cotton wool plug in the ear.
