What happens on the day of the Family Flu Vaccination Clinic?

1.       Once your family arrives, let one of our friendly staff know so we can assist you, and a nurse vaccinator will be with you shortly.

2.       The vaccination service takes place in a private room within the pharmacy. Parents are welcome to accompany younger children.

3.       The service itself is relatively quick, taking about 5 minutes for each person. This allows for the nurse to confirm consent, ensure the person being vaccinated is well, has no reaction to the vaccine, and then administer the vaccine.

4.       Following the vaccination, the person vaccinated is required to remain in the observation area for a further 15 minutes.

5.       A record of immunisation can be found at the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR)

FAQ

Which vaccine is used?

The Australian Influenza Vaccine Committee (AIVC) determines the formulation of national flu vaccines each year, based on information and recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO). Details around the strains of influenza antibodies contained in this year’s vaccine can be found at www.influenzaspecialistgroup.org.au. The vaccine administered will be an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (which helps to protect against four different and common flu viruses), and is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) according to the age of the patient.

Who should be vaccinated?

Because the strain of flu virus evolves constantly, the seasonal flu vaccination is recommended each year for most people aged six months or older. This clinic can vaccinate children from 2 years of age.

Who shouldn't have the flu vaccination?

Anyone with known egg and chicken allergies are unfortunately not able to participate in the Family Flu Clinic service, but are encouraged to seek advice from their healthcare practitioner.

Anyone who has experienced an anaphylactic reaction to antibiotics neomycin, gentamicin, polymixin or thiomersal are also not eligible to participate in this service. Speak to your pharmacist or GP about other non-egg based vaccines that may be suitable, as well as other measures you can take to help protect yourself this flu season.

What to do if a family member has the flu?

The flu is extremely contagious, and is spread easily from person to person – especially in close contact environments like the workplace, schools or at home. If a family member catches the flu, there is a higher chance you could catch it so it’s important to try and protect yourself and the rest of the family from spreading the virus further. If someone in your household gets the flu, isolate that person at home (avoid access to shared surfaces), disinfect and clean your home thoroughly, wash hands often, and limit close contact with that person.

What is the youngest age you can vaccinate a child?

Our pharmacists can provide the flu vaccine to children from the age of 2 and up. For children younger than 2, a GP or vaccination clinic can administer a vaccination to babies aged 6 months and older.
