Tips for healthy eating and losing weight
Physical activity can be built into your day. It does not have to be what you would traditionally think of as “exercise”
Try to incorporate extra steps into your everyday routine, for example:
- Take the stairs instead of the lift at work or when shopping
- park your car further away and walk
- do some house work or outdoor work, like sweeping paths or raking leaves
- learn how to read food labels - www.eatforhealth.gov.au
Try not to let your hunger get out of control – have a supply of small, healthy snacks on hand to eat between meals so that you don’t get too hungry (e.g. apples, cherry tomatoes, vegetable sticks, sugar-free chewing gum, air-popped popcorn are all great choices)
Some healthy eating habits include:
- Reduce portion sizes
- Increase your protein and fibre intake which can help you to feel fuller for longer
- Eat at regular times
- Don’t skip meals
- Drink plenty of water
- Keep healthy snacks on hand
- Limit foods high in saturated fats, salt and sugar
- Eat the rainbow: aim to include a range of fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrains in your diet
- Be aware of ‘non-hungry’ eating
