What is dry eye syndrome?
Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. You often feel intense dryness and itching in the eyes, or as though there is a foreign body in the eye.
A feeling of dryness is the most common symptom of dry eye, but some of the symptoms of dry eye are not as straightforward. For example, watery eyes (excessive tearing) is a sign that your eyes aren’t producing enough tears and they are over compensating to catch up, therefore making them water.
It can be caused by many factors, including working on a computer, dry environments, ageing, or medication.
What can trigger dry eye symptoms?
- Dry and windy environments
- Overheated or overcooled air
- Extended screen time
- Contact lenses
- Medication and health condition
- Sun and smoke
