Eczema is a chronic condition and dealing with flare ups – plus the emotions they may create – can feel like a constant process. Everyone’s eczema is different. So, if greater, more effective relief from your eczema symptoms is your goal, the first step is to seek the advice of your dermatologist, who will take the time to learn about you and create the right holistic treatment plan for your situation. Here are some of the steps your dermatologist may discuss with you.

10 steps to consider when treating eczema holistically

1. Gather your tribe. You're not expected to deal with eczema alone! Make sure you’re surrounded by people who understand and care for you and are there to support you navigate your eczema.

2. Find the source. Blood or prick tests can be used to try to determine your individual triggers.

3. Know your allergens. Some people find their eczema is worsened by an associated allergy, such as pet dander, foods or cosmetics.

4. Mild is more. Go for gentle, fragrance free deodorants, soaps and detergents, as sensitive skin is less likely to become inflamed by these products.

5. Choose soft, loose fabrics. Avoid tight, scratchy, synthetic or woollen clothing. Cotton is usually a winner.

6. Go easy on the washing. There's no need to excessively wash your face and body, as doing so risks leeching your skin's natural oils.

7. Use rubber gloves with cotton liners. Don’t rough it out at the sink: Your hands do a lot for you, so protect them.

8. Prescription corticosteroids. When recommended by your health care provider, apply these to relieve inflammation. Milder versions are also available over the counter.

9. Antibiotics. If your dermatologist believes they’ll help, these can be taken to relieve additional infections caused by nasties getting past the skin barrier.

10. Try to limit stress. Eczema can be highly emotional, and some people notice that stress impacts their flare ups. Practice mindfulness and removing unnecessary stressors from your life can be an important step.
