Here’s why to include whooping cough boosters in your festive season planning
The holidays are fast approaching, bringing with them long to-do lists: Plan menus, book leave, arrange school holiday care and save the date with friends and family. But is “update vaccinations” on your list?
After all, gatherings (especially with laughing, sharing and closeness) make it easier for infections to spread. Most of us are aware of the importance of flu and COVID-19 boosters to keep our immunity as strong as possible – but not everyone considers other vaccinations, such as whooping cough.
Why should I consider whooping cough?
Whooping cough is highly contagious and it’s possible to carry the disease without showing obvious symptoms.1 The thing is, for babies too young to have completed their routine vaccinations, an infection can evolve very quickly and develop into serious complications. If your holiday plans include spending time with babies or infants, it’s a great idea to book a whooping cough booster. Doing so helps protect those most at risk.
Do I need a booster?
The Immunisation Foundation of Australia reminds us that immunity fades over time.2 If you haven’t had a whooping cough vaccination in the last ten years, your protection against infection will be reduced. Ask your GP whether you’re up to date – and if not, book your booster. Doing this will help boost your defense and help protect the young ones in your circle of family and friends.
