It’s so easy to become overwhelmed by life admin, especially when work deadlines, children’s needs, family logistics and social commitments compete for attention. Society has taught us to care for others above ourselves – but when it comes to health, there are no prizes for martyrs. Not all health concerns have clear symptoms – so it pays to make a habit of regular check-ups.

Here are six key health checks to complete. Ask your GP or Pharmacist for assistance – and be well!

1. Ovarian cancer symptom diary

Because there isn’t a screening test it’s important to know the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer and when these are unusual, troublesome or persistent for you.

2. Cervical screening test

These screen for abnormal cells in the cervix with the potential to lead to cervical cancer when left untreated. Have one every five years with your GP, unless they advise otherwise.

3. Skin check

Change can be refreshing, though not on our skin. Watch for any freckles or moles which have changed and book in for regular checks with your GP or specialist skin cancer clinic (some will bulk bill). If you would like to check 1-3 concerning spots, some TerryWhite Chemmart pharmacies can send images to a skin cancer doctor for evaluation.

4. Breast check

It’s important to know what’s normal and not when it comes to your breasts. Make a monthly commitment to checking them for lumps, bumps or any changes, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.

5. Blood pressure and cholesterol

It’s possible to feel well but have high blood pressure or cholesterol, which when unchecked, can lead to serious heart conditions. You can book a blood pressure check at your TerryWhite Chemmart.

6. Vaccinations and boosters

It’s no secret that these past few years have been an alphabet soup of different infections. Keep on top of potential illness by maintaining your vaccinations up-to-date, including for COVID-19, travel and flu. You can book your vaccinations at your TerryWhite Chemmart.

Over 50?

Ask your GP about additional screens, including and lung screening, mammograms, bone density testing and bowel cancer screening test.
