Got post-holiday blues? It’s common to feel a little unsure about returning to work after time off. Insomnia, anxiety, tiredness and apathy can all rear their heads. Let’s plan ways to soften the return to work.

1. Have a buffer

Plan time between coming home and starting work to wind down, especially if you were overseas on long flights

2. Quick wins

Identify a few items you can quickly check off over your first week to get the ball rolling and feel more positive

3. Start on an “off” day

Is Monday usually a huge day for you? Try starting back on Wednesday instead (bonus – this also creates a mini week for your first one back!)

4. Complete a hard task

If you have two items to choose between, cross off the hardest or most important first, for a sense of achievement

5. Keep up healthy habits

Was it an indulgent holiday? Return to eating well, exercise, sleeping and limiting alcohol as soon as possible

6. A little treat

A new coffee mug, desk plant, stationery or book to read on your commute can bring you a burst of joy

7. Group dynamic

Jumping into a group project, rather than hiding away alone, can help boost energy and creativity

8. Healthy thoughts

Try mantras, brainstorming positive ideas about your return and reminding yourself of colleagues you enjoy working with

9. Support

If your feelings are a symptom of greater dissatisfaction, you may wish to plan strategies with your workplace’s HR, Employment Assistant Program or your GP
