Why it’s still important to get your flu vaccination this year
There’s been a lot of vaccine talk around these days, and with good reason. With COVID-19 still in the community and flu season just around the corner, protection against both viruses is needed.
Boosters for COVID-19 and flu are now available. But are they interchangeable?
No: COVID-19 and influenza are two different viruses, meaning that their vaccines are useless against one another.
Influenza is very contagious and can cause unexpectedly serious illness in healthy people. Getting your vaccination protects you – but also acts as protection for people in your life or circle who are high-risk for flu.
Who is considered high-risk for flu?
- Young children
- The older demographic due to generally weaker immune systems
- Women who are pregnant
- People who have chronic medical conditions (asthma, heart disease, and more)
The takeaway is: You never know how sick you may get from the flu or who you will protect by being vaccinated. So, the best course of action, is the one that protects us best: Vaccination.
