Back to school means less control over what your child touches, eats and comes into contact with. This can be challenging for parents of children with allergies, hay fever and asthma. Read on for five tips to start well for the new school year.

Pack medications

From antihistamines and inhalers to nebulisers and adrenaline autoinjectors, your Pharmacist can ensure you have adequate supplies, with an expiry date as far into the future as possible.

Practice using medications

Talk to your child about how to recognise when symptoms are worsening and who to go to for help. If it’s age appropriate, check they know how to use an inhaler or their autoinjector.

Talk to their teacher

On the agenda: Discuss triggers and symptom management, as well as ways to allow your child to participate fully in sports, activities and food-related treats.

Written action plan

In general, revise this with your child’s GP every six months or whenever symptoms change significantly. Once ready, ensure their school has a copy.

Check in

Talk to your child after school to find out how they are feeling. Their level of confidence will tell you a lot about how comfortable they are!
