Here’s your introduction to vitamin C
When the cooler months around the corner, the vitamin C buzz begins. But what is this vitamin all about and how can you boost it in your diet? Read on.
Know it
A natural antioxidant, helping protect from free radicals, plus absorb iron, boost the immune system, support skin and bone health and wound healing.1
Winter helper
Regular doses of vitamin C, or a high dose as soon as symptoms appear, may lessen a cold’s duration.2
Find it in
Leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and broccoli; and citrus fruit, strawberries, kiwi and blueberries.
How much
Adults need around 45mg/day (about half an orange or a cup of strawberries) Breastfeeding women need almost double this, while children slightly less.3
Fresh is best
Cooking, transport, shelf life and storage time can destroy vitamin C in fresh fruit and veggies.
Food first
Supplements do help boost vitamin levels, but don't contain the nutrients, minerals, fibre and more from a balanced diet.
Read the label
Don't overdo any one vitamin supplement and consider a multivitamin if you have not been diagnosed as deficient.4
