After your vaccination, you may feel a few side effects. Think sore muscles, headache, tiredness, or a mild fever.

And that means it’s time to celebrate!

While it’s not essential to feel these symptoms for a vaccination to be working, experiencing them is a sign your body has reacted to the shot and is triggering your immune system to develop a plan of attack for the next time the virus enters your body.#

And guess what? That’s exactly what we want our bodies to do.

How do vaccines work?

A vaccine works by presenting your body with a weakened or killed virus. Your immune system reacts to this newcomer and creates antibodies to protect you. If the virus returns at a later date, your body will now know how to make antibodies to fight it.%

You may be just fine after your vaccination – some people are! – but if it makes you feel better, prepare by gathering a few items to help you through the next one – two days.

Your post-vaccination tool kit

  • A calm mind – remember, if you have side effects, you don’t “have the flu”
  • Ibruprofen and paracetamol – to treat light fever, headache, body ache, or pain at the injection site
  • A cold compress – to treat any swelling
  • Water – to keep hydrated
  • Tea and warming soups – for comfort and nutrition, while adding to your water intake
  • Chocolate – for a sweet pick me up (though be aware of the sugar and caffeine content as you are rehydrating)
  • A darkened place to rest – turn your bed or couch into a rest pit stop
  • Light clothing or blanket – keep your temperature stable and avoid overheating, especially if you have a light fever
  • Podcasts, books, and Netflix – to wind down
