Betadine® for sore throats

What causes sore throats?

Sore throats can be caused by many different things, from the common cold virus, to cool dry air dehydrating your throat or straining your muscles by talking loudly for a long time.

Sometimes, however, a sore throat can be the result of the bacteria that were already living in your mouth and throat. These bacteria exist in a delicate balance, working to help your body stay healthy.

However, sometimes this balance can be disrupted, and the usually small numbers of ‘bad’ bacteria can multiply and lead to a sore throat.

What is the difference between a gargle & a lozenge?

A throat gargle is a liquid solution that is placed in the mouth. To gargle It, you tip your head back and exhale to make the liquid bubble, and then spit out the solution.

Gargles often contain antiseptic ingredients. Throat Lozenges are flavoured preparations that are sucked or held in the mouth, these may also contain pain relieving ingredients and antibacterial agents.

Why use a gargle?

Gargling with a povidone-iodine solution, such as Betadine® Sore Throat Gargle, helps kill bacteria living in your mouth and throat, which reduces the number of bad bacteria that may be causing your sore throat.

Why do you need to spit out the solution after gargling?

Although Betadine® Sore Throat Gargle is intended to be used in the mouth and throat, you must not swallow it.

Gargling is a way to make sure that the product reaches the bacteria in your throat. DO NOT swallow the liquid.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Why use a sore throat lozenge?

Soothing a sore throat with lozenges offers a targeted approach to relief. Lozenges help throat discomfort at the source by delivering treatments such as antibacterial and numbing agents directly to the area they are needed in the throat, without you needing to swallow a medicine.

As the lozenge dissolves in your mouth, the treatment is slowly released into your saliva, coating the inside of your mouth and throat, allowing it to stay in contact with your sore throat for longer.
